Further, we need to realize that meal frequency and weight loss do not go hand in hand. What it comes down to is calories consumed at the end of the day.
Eating an extra 2000 calories a day may seem like a lot, but it's really just 3 or 4 slices of pizza and a pop added in for good measure. Even a salad with pecans and cheese on it can skyrocket a meal to a 1000 plus calories. So, if we were to take running for example, you would have to run 30K just to burn that meal off.
The point here is that it is very easy to mindlessly consume calories, but the effort required to burn that off can be overwhelming and often impossible.
Let's take a closer look at your metabolism and how it affects weight gain. First of all, an increased metabolic rate is a side effect of gaining weight. So, the more weight you carry, the higher your rate becomes and ultimately, the more calories you will burn.
In contrast, as you lose weight, the slower your metabolism becomes, and thus the more activity that is needed to burn the same number of calories.
From this, we can extrapolate that gaining and losing weight is simple physics, not your metabolism as the media would like you to believe. So, we need to stop blaming our metabolism for weight gain, and instead start looking at our workouts, diet, and lifestyle.
Meal frequency and metabolic rate is another area that often receives a lot of attention. You'll regularly hear that 6 small meals spread out over the course of a day is the best method for losing weight, or even the merits of having a big healthy breakfast to jump-start the day.
What you won't hear is that this doesn't matter. What it comes down to is simply the amount of calories you ate over a given time period. There is no magic to how often you eat, just how many calories your body takes in at the end of the day.
